Independent book stores are a symbol of our open society, and we work to maintain a diversity of information and ideas. Superstores are able to stock books in high volume and offer discounts, but sometimes their emphasis on maximizing profits prevents them from supporting poorly-selling books that may actually be the richest sources of new ideas. Also, many chains refuse to carry books they perceive as "controversial." We see this as an infringement of free speech.
